Post by Rowdy75 on Sun 11 Oct 2009, 11:58 pm

This started out as a project to build a small village for wargaming. However an article in an old issue of Australian Model Railway Magazine has changed that. It is now a project to build the structures I need for my eventual layout. I have started out with the local independent service station. It will eventually be a diorama style unit I can place intact on the layout with people and cars etc. Scale is HO (1/87). Work has stopped at the moment until I visit the LHS and get more supplies. The basic design was copied from the article in AMRM.

The main building

There are 2 buildings for the service station project. The smaller second one is finished.

No. It is going to be hard enough detailing the interior of the main building and then adding the cars etc. This building and the railway station will take the longest of the whole project. Several of the smaller ones may be finished before those two are.

Some more progress made on the the servo. Need to build some more interior items , particularly for the front shop part.

To be honest I'm not too sure yet, haven't really thought about it , the only thing I'm certain of is a fridge to sell the drinks out of. Alot of it will come down to what I can find, build or convert to make passable bits of machinery out of.

Don't forget the "usable spares" leaning against the back wall , diffs , gearboxes , panels etc and also a threadbare and grease stained lounge in the corner with scale picture and people magazines ...

For some reason I was thinking this was going to be 1:35 scale , I've just re-read the first post and seen it's HO (1:87) the detail is amazing for that size . Any chance of the basic measurments of the main shed or even a photo of it with a 20 cent piece for comparrison ?

measurements are 140mm * 225mm. I am planning a
complete little town and the servo will be the largest along with the
railway station and goods shed. Anyway here is a comparison photo with
a 20c coin and the two other buildings I currently have on the go.

I have started on some stuff like that. Newspapers on the front counter, pinups in the workshop area.

They are all brilliant Geoff , without knowing the scale I would easily have said 1:24 or 1:35 , definitely not 1:87

This is great.
I find it's the small stuff that makes this sort of diorama.
I used to go to a model engineering show every year and there was a guy there with a huge HO model railway layout which had scale birds dotted around. He would challange people to spot and identify them all. Each year he'd move them, add some and take some off to keep you guessing.
So how about a flock of scale Galahs on the roadside, a load of Cockies in a tree (with sound effects!) and some magpies eating roadkill?

Uneek yeah I had forgotten about them. I will have to check out the Kerroby range for birds too. Not much has occurred on the building just now (work got in the way), I did replace the Holden sign with one more appropriate for the era I am modeling though after talking with Shoey.
