Ford Sierra XR8

Post by zenrat on Mon 16 Nov 2009, 10:16 am

250 of these were built in South Africa as a homologation exercise for local saloon car racing.
I'm thinking Tamiya XR4 plus Revell '32 engine.
Engine looks pretty much like the carburetted Revell version bar the air cleaner and i'll need to find a 5 speed Borg Warner 'box and twin cooling fans.

Tight fit though

Grille looks different

But wheels look the same

Here's more pics

Thats pretty cool Fred. My brother had one of these four door things, it only had a crappy 4 banger in it. it also had a Telstar front bumper.
He sold it to the wreckers in Sarina (Mackay) they put it on the roof where it sat there for years and rusted away.

Now that looks like a lot of fun!

Isn't the Tamiya kit a two door?

Hmmm, yes, bugger.
Tamiya kit is a 2 door.
Bit more work involved then.
or, call it a phantom 2 door version.

They should shift as the Sierra is significantly smaller than the equivalent Falcon. It was introduced as a replacement for the Cortina and was itself superceded by the Mondeo.
The ultimate road going Sierras (XR4x4 and Cosworths) were killed off by skyrocketing insurance premiums (compulsary TPI not included in the rego in the UK) as Ford discovered they had built a car whose performance outstripped it's security.

I'm looking for the rear wing rubbers and a new set of front lights for the Sierra XR8 as this is all I require to complete this rebuild. can anybody make a recommendation of a reputable place I can contact to obtain these items and maybe even more in the future?
