Alaskan Logging Trucks and Equipment .

Post by scummy on Sun 26 Dec 2010, 7:47 pm

Found this section on the model cars magazine forum and thought i'd show it here .Apparently the bottom fell out of the loggin industry in alaska so they just walked away leaving it to nature to reclaim, he says ," We are out of reach of the scrappers up here, so everything gets parked and left. I have around 10,000 pics of these things in the weeds all over Alaska. Lots of KW, Mack, International Harvester," Etc.....
I was just shocked to see what they left , click on link and weep .

Wow! What a lot of equipment just going to rust. Some unusual equipment there too.
Thanks for sharing.

Gees there's some great photos there dad, plenty of inspiration and ideas. I've got a couple of Alaskan Hauler KW's and log trailers.
They did the same when they built the Snowy scheme, not viable to remove the equipment so they dug a huge hole in the side of a hill and buried a lot of it and there's also a heap at the bottom of one of the dams.
Such a waste.

There must be a lot of profit in the logging/pulp industry to be able to write off those machines. What a shameful waste! Evil or Very Mad

Profit is marginable in the timber industry considering ongoing costs and equipment maintenance & fuel. These machines are too big (heavy) for the highways and not "on-road" compliant in any form, so storing them in a reasonable condition is viable for later scrapping.

The last Pacific P16 was built in '94/95 and none were ever built again. Not a bad effort for trucks that could never be outclassed as they were overbuilt to start with!

Here's one working back in the 1970's in British Columbia (put your earmuffs on!)

Here's a 1:1 scratch built from the floor up...(in 3 parts?)
