First off all I applied Model Master Rust over Polly S Rust. After that I used a cheap hairspray and sprayed it over the model. As long as the hairspray was wet I poured salt over it. On some spots more, on other spots less salt. The next step was to spray the model with Model Master Copenhagen Blue and let it dry. Then I used an old toothbrush and a hand brush to scrub away the salt. I did this under running water. While doing that I removed the salt and some of the Model Master Rust so that the Polly S Rust comes through. This was a not expected effect.
When I was finished with this you will get rough looking surface where the salt was. I the used a tooth pick to scrub away the blue in area where I couldn't use the tooth brush.

That’s in short words how I did it. As an alternative you could use water instead of hairspray fix the salt to the model. But keep in mind salt water soluble. I did this on my '30 Ford Rad Rod

Here more about
Salt technique videos and Hairspray technique videos

Michael

BTW.: I is a simple technique have a look to at the military or railroad modellers

What a sad end for such a nice car. I hope some young guy comes along and buys it so that it can be modded up and it will see glory days once again. Very nice rust and old flakey paint effects - well done.
