Trying something different , 1:35 garage dio

Post by sports850 on Wed 23 Nov 2011, 4:17 pm

This started as a late night ebay troll (don't roll your eyes , I know we've all been there Smile ) and is an experiment into weathering and detailing . I found a resin kit for a lathe , drill press and other things , and then got a German tank crew to go with it . They don't know it yet but they are going to be rapidly demobbed and transferred to an English garage in the 60's and start playing with mini's ...

The kit as it came with a roughly 1:35 scale mini ,

a picture I found on the net (the closest it gets to instructions for the kit ...) of a completed set ,

and the results so far of about an hours squinting at the above photo trying to figure out what bit goes where , and also supergluing my fingers to various things on my work desk and computer ....

Next is to finish sanding the base of the lathe level (needs a little adjustment) and then start painting and detailing , going to try pastels and a few other things and also use the plastic card from Bazooka to make the garage so this is a learning project more than anything else .

You're off to a good start mate - best of luck with this project. It looks interesting and you've got one watcher here at least.

Always good to try something new Ian, adds to the interest and nice to learn some new skills at the same time.

I've seen those tools on Evil-Bay. What were you doing in the military modelling section? Hmmmmmm? Surprised

My (1:1) lathe has the same problem due to the skill and expertise of the concreters who laid the slab. I have hardwood wedges levelling it up. Would that be too much detail to do the same on your garage floor?

I just searched resin in model building and found a lot of good things Smile Was thinking of the tiny clear resin wine and spirit bottles to leave around the workshop too ... If only the manufacturers gave us as many good things in 1:24 as are availible in 1:35 Sad Just need to find a good 1:35 scale mini or two now (looking closely at the resin kits from the UK that are meant for slot car chassis , can get sedan , pickup , van and mini marcos etc ....) .

Did you use the Tamiya pastels or the artist stick ones Allan ? I've been looking at youtube tutorials with the artist ones and they look pretty good . What did you use to seal them after weathering , most of the ones I've looked at are using hairspray as they reckon it goes on drier and doesn't dilute the pastels .

Oh , Fred , some miniature hardwood wedges might be the go too

This is what you need to hold pastel powder in place you only need a dust coat of it on,hold about 12" way, once it drys you can add more pastel powder on top,I used cheap artist dry pastels there is about 12 to 24 in set just rub dry brush a long the side of pastel,Oh you can get other brands of fixative, art shops or art supplys.

Only had time for a quick play with the pastels last weekend (and it's taken me till now to get the pics up) but have to say WOW , these things are cool and easily add character to things . The photo's nothte best as my camera was in the work truck so was from my phone camera . Hopefully I'll get some more time to play this weekend and have my camera ready this time ...

Not yet I'm afraid Allan , between christmas planning , kids , property settlement with ex wife (not fun , you really find out someones character once you start this crap) , painting the FJ and a few hundred other things I haven't looked at it since the last update . Roll on Christmas break to get things done and enjoy some building time Smile
