Another '40 coupe

Post by Carps on Sun 21 Apr 2013, 3:28 pm

I've had this car in my head for a few years now, since the latest HAMB build off is Forty Fords, I figured what the heck, I'll build this as a quickie, just to keep the Yanks honest. Laughing Laughing Laughing

After all the parts selecting and mocking up, I'm finally started, using the old kit shown. The engine is partly assembled and in paint, I've selected a colour for the body and started detailing everything ready for the build.

The pics should also give an idea of where it's headed, nothing radical, just a nice clean late fifties/early sixties style '40 coupe.

Maybe once it's done I'll finish a couple of other long lost projects. rolf

Hey TJ, should you be here or working on your own much more radical and oh so slick '40 coupe?

This one is just a quick build of a simple car.

We did that in science class at school, when the mice ran out we used frogs. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Meanwhile, here's the donk in situ, with the trans crossmember removed and a little trimming inside the X member brace it fits like it was meant to be there.

The beginning of wheel cap detailing, can you guess what colour I'll be painting the car?

Got a bit sidetracked today, so didn't get any paint on this thing but did at least move it along a bit.

The engine is fully assembled and plumbed.

Also got the wheels detailed, chassis painted and axles assembled into it. Probably not noticeable but uite a bit of detail work carried out on the body including re-radiusing the rear wheel arches.

Re: Another '40 coupe

Post by Carps on Sun 05 May 2013, 6:02 pm

So, I cleaned up the front wheel arches and got stuck into laying on some colour.

I think I now know why I gave up painting cars as soon as I finished my apprenticeship.

Anyhow, not too much screwed up and I'm almost happy with the end result, so while the paintwa drying I got stuck into the interior.

Pretty straight forward using the parts in the kit and some detailing. The dash and dials don't looks as good as they will coz I shot these pics before the lens material had cured.

I swear the engine fitted before I added colour and then it didn't fit anymore. Had to relocate the generator for fender well clearance, all else is OK.

The 'guards and bonnet have had a coat or two of floor polish applied. This is the first time I've used this stuff even tho I bought it home from the US years ago, The paint is enamel and with the heavy metallic it dries a tad flat and since I have no enamel clear coat, I figured I'd give it a try. Seems to work OK, but I guess only time will tell, I guess I can use auto wax on it like I would a regular clear coat.

The bumpers are the stock '40 units with the overiders removed and then refinished with Alclad Chrome, I seem to be getting better with using this stuff although it's still not perfect. I'm also a bit bummed that the Studebaker tailamps don't sit neatly pin the fenders, but they're impossible to trial fit, maybe next time I'll sand the peak flat so they sit down nicely. The decal seems to finish the big expanse of blue on the boot lid perfectly.

Still a few details to complete before final assembly but I reckon the next post, it will be on the shelf and finished.
