41 Willy's

Post by DeeCee on Mon 19 Aug 2013, 3:49 pm

My plan is to build the toughest Willy's i can with what bits i have laying around.
I have a couple of versions of this kit, including the newest monogram version, but they all have the exact same wheels, just different decals.
So , first job was to find a different wheel/tyre combo, and then upgrade the blower to something a tad larger, and a pair of pro stock Dominator 4bbl carbies.
Chassis is done in Brandy Wine Nail polish, but i thing the body will be done black??, will decide a bit further down the track.

Yeah I like those rear rims too DC. That's a nice red on the chassis too.
You gonna cut this sucker up a bit or leave it as is?

Cheers guys, no TJ, i dont think i need to do too much to it as they are a pretty hot looking shape to start with, the engine mods and wheels/tyres, should just about do it, other than going to drop it as low as i can and detail it reasonably well.

Allan, gonna say no on the 2-tone, as i think a solid colour will show off the body lines better, still thinking black, with red interior and chassis, maybe a pin stripe to match?? will see.

I have plans for a slammed Willys, too, but the thing that has stopped me up to now is lowering the front suspension, so I'll be interested to see how you go about it. With their big fat fenders these things look fabulous down in the weeds. I agree on the solid color. It "sells" the bulbous contours of the bodywork. A deep gloss black sounds just about right!

A few years back I did one of these in a "de-blinged" version is grey primer with all the chrome (of which there is a prodigious amount in this kit) stripped and replaced with shades of metalizer. It worked out OK but I still wish I'd slammed it...

Looking forward to seeing more, more, more...niceone

Spot of Hijacking here Dale but I think it's relevant...
It's tricky to lower the Willys Street Rod but it can be done.
If you want it to still steer and for the engine to fit you have to treat it like a 1:1 car and re angle the wishbones (A-Arms).
I lowered the front when I stuck this chassis under a '32 body.
Didn't take pics while I did it though.  That would have been far too helpful.
Here are the only WIP pics I have.

It's all a bit hazy now but I think I turned the cross member upside down and I had to relocate the upper wishbone mounts as otherwise the castor angle was severe.  To get the tie rod to clear the chassis I cut the ends off and added wire sections which I bent or dog legged upwards.

Thanx Fed & Brett. Fred, thanx for the idea about reversing the crossmember. I;ll check it out. And Brett, that looks plenty low enough to me (and tuff enuff, too Cool ). How d'ya do it?

Yikes! It occurs to me we're perpetuating the hijack... Should we take this discussion elsewhere and let Dale get on with the work at hand?

Re: 41 Willy's *Some Details.*

I think i sorted it,  i flipped the steering hubs upside down, then left to right, and then removed the tie rod bolt and stuck it back on the bottom, as it ended up on top with the switch around.
( now i'm confused )!
The one on the left is stock, the right one has been flipped and the bolt moved.

Then used Fred's idea, fitted lower crossmember upside down, lifted the angle of the upper wishbones just by gently massaging them with a little force.

Also opened up the boot and hinged it, as it has a nicely tubbed rear, will add a battery and maybe a fuel cell aswell.

Should sit like this one i prepared earlier.

Very Happy

While we're on the subject I came across this pic while sorting some of my photos earlier.
Mustang 2 type IFS on a deuce chassis.  It shows that Revells' wishbones are on the fat side but I suppose if they were accurate they'd be a bit flimsy.

Thanx to you both for all the details and the basic approaches. All the cars shown so far are plenty low enough and the solution seems pretty straightforward. As long as the axle centerline is above the frame rail I assume it's mission accomplished! I think I know what to do now. It all seems so obvious when you know how...

For some reason when I built my stock stance bling-free Revell street-rod Willys I completely missed the posable steering aspect. Is it a feature of the kit?

In any case, in the interests of keeping the hi-jack alive here are some suitably irrelevant pictures of my "hi-boy". These days I can't stand the tall (but not tall enough gasser-wise) stance, but I do like the utilitarian primer and metalizer look. It's an aspect that must be in the DNA of this car because Brett took a similar approach. It seems to work slammed or unslammed. Something to re-visit in the future... But slammed is better IMHO! And next time it will be shiny!

Build on DeeCee!

Could well be.  I took this pic at the 2008 Victorian Hot Rod Show.  Think it was on a trade stand.
