'62 Pontiac Catalina

Post by zenrat on Tue 17 Sep 2013, 2:50 pm

Another box stock Super Stock build - I must be losing my touch.
I've been working on this for a while but it stalled when it got too cold & dank to clear.
All i'm adding is plug wires.  These AMT 421s are a very nice little build on their own.  They even have an alternator bracket.

I even followed the paint call outs for the seats - for once masked and sprayed (all enamels from rattle cans) rather than brushed.

This is the body I drop kicked into the kitchen cabinets when polishing it.  I satin cleared it not because of that but because I (again) didn't thin the clear enough and it orange peeled badly and I got bored polishing it out.  I should have known it wasn't fated to be shiny when I had to strip off the first attempt at the blue.
The decals are excellent in this kit.  Best white i've ever put on.  They look a bit insipid and pale on the paper but work really well.  And I love the font used for the HP & capacity lettering.  No idea what it is but it shouts "60's".  I also like the fact that the class designation say ASS...

i rekon this is an outsanding kit and can understand why u built it out of the box .....it doesnt need any mods its excellent as it is, course painting can make or break a model but it looks like this ones a winner

Thanks folks.
I'm building up enough cars to run a Stock Eliminator in my display case.  So far i've got a Dodge 330 (Color Me Gone 2), Thunderbolt (needs a touch of wreckscue & decals made) and Dyno Don 61 & 62 Chevys.  After this i've got a Ramchargers Dodge 330, a Dragon Lady '67 Coronet and a '68 Hemi Dart.
-edit.  and a '68 Mustang -
I also like the look of the newly repopped Grumpys Toy 66 Nova.

Thanks, but it's not hard to mask up as it's all straight lines.  Just takes time.

Looking good Fred, I think I may have to start one of these, newer than I like, but I seem to have a few in my stash, must be something to do with my Poncho fetish.

Do it.  It's a great kit.  One that shows what AMT can do when they try.

This is one of Amt's best kits. I've built one and plan on doing a few more.
I never thought the day would come where I see you building a box stock build, even matching the box art.

Bit's & pieces.  Painting all the stuff that goes underneath and keeps the chassis from scraping on the road or takes away the noise.

Re: '62 Pontiac Catalina

AMT strike again.  It seems even with their "good" kits there will be a flaw.
With the '66 Olds it's the rear bumper fit and with the '41 Woody it's the interior fit.
On this one it's the tyre fit.
Built exactly as the instructions show (for the drag option) the rear tyres foul the bodywork.  And not just by a little bit.  It's enough to push one of the wheels off plum.
I suspect it's because the new tyres they put into the latest issue are slightly wider than the old slicks with the off centre hole they used to provide.
I should have known to test fit before painting the rear axle but you assume that with an out of box build it'll be OK.
Shows what I know.
Also shows that the old saying is true.  Assumption IS the mother of all f**k ups.
The problem is easilly solved by cutting off the stops moulded to the axle that the wheels butt up against.  The area where these were will need to be filed down slightly so the wheels can slide further on.  And then the ends of the axle will have to be trimmed.
Not much trouble but it hasn't done the paint any good.

This is done.  I just got to take pics.
Can't do it today as the constant barrage of gum tree limbs being blown onto the tin roof of the shed is putting me in a perpetual state of alarm.
