1980 RX 7 * IT'S A ROTARY*

Post by DeeCee on Fri 27 Dec 2013, 7:29 pm

Well, to kick off next year, i have spent quite a time in the model room doing nothing but pondering, "what the hell to build next?".
Found an RX 7 in the stash that i got from a mate a while ago, only problem, the kit comes with NO MOTOR!, there is no way i'm building it curbside either.
SO, the next problem is how do i scratch build a rotary??, no clue what they are meant to look like, so i will be doing alot of google search, and hopefully i can come up with some realistic pics
and see what i can come up with, or it might end up with a V8, hopefully not though.

THIS BODY.

WITH THESE WHEELS.

EQUALS, SOMETHING LIKE THIS, I HOPE.

Good luck i say.  Rolling Eyes

Have a crack at building a rotor Dale, I reckon you can do it, even make a 20B to be different.
Years ago there was a blue one of these with graphics and massive Simmons wheels with a blown 13B in it that was pretty cool.

I remember that blown RX7, it was a stand-out car in its day, and yes, if i do go the scratch build route, it will be a turbo/blown  20B, just to push those boundaries . Actually looking forward to something different.

The brand is  IMAI and covered in Japanese writing, which i have never heard of. It also has the Group C size guards and rear wing, so should work out pretty tough i hope.

A rotary could test your scratch building skills old son.

If you want to hear the sweaaateesttt sound ever ...go type 20B into YouTube .... best sound in the world (Apart from a v8 at full song)

I've seen pics of someone scratchbuilding a scale Mazda rotary. Pretty sure they put their plans up on the interweb as well. A bit of intensive goggling might be in order...

Looking forward to this one. Smile
If you're going to build your own motor, you could always go all out and have a crack at a 6 rotor. Check out the PPRE RX4. That thing sounds incredible.
Here we go...

It's certainly going to be a challenge i think, Josh, have youtubed that 6 rotor before, AWSOME beast it is,  i suppose once i work out a plan for 1 rotor, it should be easy from there on, and stick as many together as i can fit in the engine bay, Dean, have done that a few times too mate, they do sound great with a few revs on them, Fred, will start googling for those plans i think mate.

Re: 1980 RX 7 * IT'S A ROTARY*

Post by DeeCee on Mon 30 Dec 2013, 4:54 pm

Well, was an interesting day at the bench, trying to scratch build something i know NOTHING about.  Rolling Eyes
Started with 3 pieces of plastic to make 1 barrel. (thats what i'm calling them.)

Now, on a  20B, i need 3 x with the rotor thing in them, which have the exhaust port, and 4 x of the inlet ones. ( i think ). So i had to have 21 pieces of plastic to shape,
to make 7 barrels, to complete the block so to speak.  Then made inlet and outlet flanges, and somewhere to put the plugs on the other side. 2 per rotor.

Now it needs lots of clean-up, some filler etc, If someone knows Rotary's, (Dean), please be honest and steer me in the right direction coz i have 1 hand tied behind my back and both eyes covered on this one.

Thanks for the interesting comments and ideas too guys, a V8 would suit me perfectly, but what's modeling without a challenge every now and then,
