Rowdy Burns DoT Exxon Lumina

Post by Shunter on Fri 24 Oct 2014, 8:23 pm

Like the most I enjoyed the movie when it came out and was able to look past the mistakes etc and just enjoyed a little escapism and some good action scenes. I also like black cars and so for me this was the choice, I remember hearing the single car on the track and that great reverberation of the engine and exhaust note bouncing off the walls, and it just sums up NASCAR and the love of a great sounding V8 engine.
So I shall get started on this one and hope to keep the updates going.

OK it was time to cut some plastic from the sprues and get some work done. So what can I say, itís not much but it is a start. I have attached the front and rear clips and worked on blending them in along with the tedious process of removing those wonderful sink marks. The firewall is attached to the chassis and this one is quite good in that it has joined up well and has not needed too much sanding, I will putty this in and if I get lucky I may be able to get this into primer on the weekend.

The chassis and interior was done with Tamiya AS20 and then hit with TS13. I then masked up a couple of days later and hit the body with TS6 flat black for an even cover followed by TS14 gloss black. I have to say I am a little disappointed that it has come out not as glossy as usual. Maybe I have come rusty I donít know but I will decal it and then fire up the airbrush and get some 2K onto it that will get a shine. I went with Tamiya sprays as I could not find the airbrush and then after ripping the house apart and opening lots of boxes I found it so that will make my life easier, the joys of building a new house.

Thank you SF....appreciate that.
Next up was sanding the tyres and after a wash I sprayed them with gloss coat lacquer to make it easier for the decals to go on. Decals were applied and allowed to dry for the week.

Then today the dull coat to happen tone things down and to I hope make the tyres look a little more realistic. I wanted to add some details with a gel pen but with the move and things still packed I could not locate them so I will just go with the markings you see.

I ground away the backs of the wheels to open up the five holes slots, even though this will only be a shelfer I just like the look better than solid wheels, and luckily I have a Dremel so that makes life a lot easier. The wheels were already chromed from Monogram as i pinched these from a Mark Martin Folders Thunderbird but it was a touch too shiny, so I used some caustic soda to remove that and then sprayed these in flat black, gloss black and then Alclad Chrome, it looks a lot more realistic than Revells' version, to tone them down a little I than used a black wash.

I hate to brag but it is so hot here in Melbourne right now the only place to be is inside with the AC cranked up.....
So a good excuse to get some work done on models, rare for me right now with the little fella dominating our time, but that is a good thing.
So the latest on this build is, stripes have gone on and did so very well.

After letting these dry for a week i got the opportunity to get some 2K on, my usual jar was used for something else so i used the flask style one, well lets just say it was a disaster and this model almost ended up in the box for another day. I could no tget the flow right, i had spitting and ened up with this orange peel finish. I went thick on it knowing i would be rubbing this sucker back.

I wet sanded the body and then proceeded to use some cutting compound to try to get a smooth even surface, i then followed this up with the Maguires Scratch X to soften it all some.

So now i shall get to the decals.....
