Dato 1200 ute

Post by dufasdave on Wed 14 Jan 2015, 11:13 pm

I know its only a 4 cylinder but when Hasegawa brought these utes out I thought straight away that I would build my old work ute. Only thing is that the model kit is based on the long wheel base utes that were never sold here in Australia. So, out with the razor saw and nearly 10mm has been cut out of the middle, the width of the tape in the pics. Getting it back together now and will take some more pics. Will also put up pic of original ute once I scan it. Thanks to Shoey for having some wheels that are pretty damn close to what the old work ute had.

I like it, you have to build a 1/24 scale bludger behind the wheel!
I've had those wheels since 1982, can't believe I still had the whole set

Got about 3 weeks to finish it Dave. If it were old Drysack it would be done by now, haha.

Well Tubman, on a move now. Body cut and almost ready to be glued back together. The signwriting will be the challenge. The original pic below of the work ute was taken before it was sign written. You can also see the other work truck and van in there as well with the sign writing already done. When I say sign writing I don't mean vinyl cutting either. They were all painted by hand by a Toowoomba sign writer as well as all the signage on the building.

I wasn't going to mention that but since you brought it up going by the specs I found the distance from the axle to rear of ute in the long tray is 60 mm longer than in the short tray. Therefore scaled down is about 2mm. I wasn't going to worry about it as its about as wide as a hacksaw blade cut so for the amount of work to cut, rejoin and putty for a blade width cut I wasn't going to. Hmmmm, but now that its been pointed out I may have to.

Nice work.  But isn't the back too long behind the wheels?

Yes it was done by a bloke that used to be in Diagonal St. Carline is in Water St between Herries and James St. It now trades as A1 Exhaust and Mechanical. Still owned by the same people. I was there from 1992 until 2007, 15 years.

My dad use to own the Toowoomba sign shop. My old man is a sign writer by trade. His shop was on Stephen street near diagonal st parallel to the railway line where it connects to James street.

You had to make me think then Benny. Just checked google maps and the sign writer we used was in diagonal street. It is now Williamson Brothers Plumbers. I sort of remember The Toowoomba Sign Shop.
