BMF - any tips.

Post by baZOOKa on Tue 21 Apr 2015, 6:11 pm

Anyone got any tips on making BMF stick properly. Its bare metal brand and it just does not seem to stick very well and is near impossible to get all the little kinks and wrinkles out.

Its doing my head in. Any tips welcome.

pretty sure i read somewhere that there was a problem with the ultra brite and it was replaced by new and improved, so the problem may be with the product rather than the user

My ultra bright is ordinary, and the black is hopeless, but the "new improved" is awesome.
A Q-tip ( EAR CLEANER THING) and a tooth pick is your best friend, so is a brand new scalpel blade mate.

The early ultra bright was waay too thick, the new stuff is much thinner and applies almost the same as the original material, which I think gives a better representation of 'real' stainless mouldings and trim anyhow.

I usually use the Q tip dipped in warm soapy (dishwashing detergent) water to wash down the moulding where the material is to be applied, for some reason the residue helps the foil stick to the painted surface.

Thanks guys. Q tips (In my day they were called cotton buds ...good old USA'ism) work well but I found the rubber on the end of a pencil works well too

The soapy water makes sense. Used to use that to put graphics on cars in a previous life.

Where do I get this ' new improved' foil Dale ???

same mate, last time I checked a Q tip was the bit of the stick you hit pool balls with.

The same place you got the ultra bright from mate, I don't use evilbay or the computer to buy stuff,
I rely on a friend to get me some when he shops from the USA.

Best foiling tip I can give you that has not already been said is don't fight it.  If it's not going well then maybe it's not a foiling day so put it away and do something else instead.  Same applies to anything that takes concentration and a steady hand.

Nope, I actually use Q tips, they are much softer in the cotti=n bud than local issue stuff.

I get them from Costco, in bulk pack for not much cash, actually I reckon I may even have a lifetime supply already. Laughing Laughing Laughing

The ones with the plastic tube are best IMO as you get left with a useful tube to do things like fit small parts onto for painting.  Last lot Mrs z bought have cardboard stalks and are useless for this purpose.
