What I've been mucking about with

Post by slowlylearning on Sat 05 Dec 2015, 1:19 am

Hilux with Orange Wheels stockies all the way from Japan, one lug from each wheel musta got lost in the post cos there's only four per wheel!

Started making a canopy for the back

Rolly-pollies (I'm using the tyres from an older skyline kit)

Favorite part so far is how nice the paint turned out on the dash Laughing

Monte Carlo snapper kit I tried out some paint stuff, under the instruction of a good mate.
Laid out the thin lines of making tape

... And a bit of masking/painting/masking/painting later

You can see on the boot where I stuffed up a little bit, should'a been paying more attention to the masking Rolling Eyes

I have painted more in these past 3 months than the last 3 years clown This ones a 70s Ford I think, it's an older kit that supposed to be a police interceptor type dealio. This one's lined up to cop the lowrider treatment too

The speck on the roof came right off, it wasn't very dense, unlike me Laughing

And some spicy rice hit the bench Twisted Evil

WOW!! You are a busy boy mate.
Nice scratch work on the canopy, and that line work is exceptional, you have mastered it already,
there is no excuses now, and the paint panels look great.
The blue Ford has come up a treat, and i like the motivation in the front of the ricer too.

What's going in the front of the Hiliux, stock or hot?
Like the rice burner too, at least you corrected the HP issue in the front of that one Wink

Seems I already made a thread for a couple-a these builds, sorry 'bout that guys Rolling Eyes

Thanks Dale, the canopies coming along, dunno if I'll continue on with it or not, all the dualcab Hilux's (Hili?) I've seen have had the tray-sides with the nubbin channel thing along the sides, and the curves on the top of the canopy will be a headscratcher to figure out. Been loving the airbrushing though, learning about all the mixing etc. Scored a buttload of Tamiya pots of paint from Gumtree, but they're mostly blues/blacks/greys. And I don't trust myself, being slightly colourblind. Those fade-lines on the Monte Carlo are in a colour that said 'blue' on the jar, looked gray to me though. I'm still learning how to thin and shoot metallics and pearl-powder infused clear, so the Ford's gunna be a guinnea pig for that stuff Smile

Cheers tj, yeah the Hilux is a sleeper build, thinking either LS (from a 98 Firebird kit) or Chev BB 396 with 572 rocker covers. Either way I'm gunna be making a bunch of engine-parts to hop up what I've got, even going to try and get some casting supplies so I don't have to scratchbuild multiples of things like rocker covers and tunnelram manifolds because symmetry is lost on me Rolling Eyes . The dream is to have a lathe and mill so (theoretically) I could make a master of just about anything a cast it, but I haven't won the lotto yet Laughing You know, it's a crying shame that for the money shops charge for the Aoshima kits, like the Silvia, they don't commonly come with engines. I think the silvia didn't anyway, I've got an SR20 inline 4, but that might have come from a newer Silvia kit. I got a bunch of 98 Firebird kits when Toyworld was chucking them away for cheepies and I've been starting lots of builds with a turbo LS sleeper-type build in mind, god knows I probably wont finish em, but I've really been enjoying daydreaming about it Sleep Don't force it dude, build when ya want, what ya want and how ya want when you feel like it Very Happy

You have the same issue as me dude, I'm red-green colour blind, hence my paint schemes are simple and generally with bright colours.
Casting is an addiction too, once you start you can't stop, best thing I've done within my hobby though. Once you get a part in a kit that's well detailed you now have as many of them as you need without having to buy a whole kit just for a single part. I've done whole engines, Viper V10, 426 Hemi etc, tonnes of Flathead V8 stuff and even whole wheels with the tyres on. They paint up nice and you can flatten the bottoms to make the car sit dead flat and they look more realistic with a weighted look ...possibilities are endless just limited by your budget and time.
I have a hobby lathe too, bought it years ago, very handy thing for making masters, for sure.

I'm not overly worried about colours for lowrider painjobs, anything goes with that stuff, as long as it sparkles Laughing Yeah I can't wait to start casting stuff, no more un-symmetrical valve covers for me Razz Making and lipping out wheels is the main reason I want to cast thought, yeah, as soon as I put an ally lip on a wheel I'll be "yep, $1200 well spent" Laughing

Thanks guys Smile Been chugging along, getting more familiar with thinning paints, fades and using pearl powders. Used a Catalina as a test mule, royally stuffed it up the first time, thinned the white too much so I had to sand that all off. Second time around was a little better, the bottom of the passenger door is a bit donked up, must have gone a bit too feral with the clear. But I'm happy enough with it as a first go for fades and a fullcoat of pearl-powder clear Smile

Looks awesome dude.
BMF can be a PITA but just got to remember 3 things, use a new blade, don't press too hard and cut through your paint and if you stuff it up peel that sucker off and go again. I've been using it for over 25 years and still stuff it sometimes, I just don't stress about it. I also only use the chrome not the ultra bright, it's garbage.

Thanks man, aside from the finneky-ness of it, it's extremely satisfying. Thanks for the tips, I got a whoe bunch of blades from a trade store, $1.90 for a packet of tn so that wont be an issue, the rest I suppose is up to practice lol Got the perfect fodder, a 62 Impala. Just gotta decide on how to paint it, no idea which direction to go with. It'll probably be a lowrider or a custom though Very Happy

Finally all done with moving. I think I don't very much like moving much at all.
Dalby is very nice though. Got my stuff set up over the last few days. Feels really good to be back at the bench.

Got these wibbly-wobbly wheeled thingo's just about ready for paint (when I set up the airbrush)

Completely not automotive-related but I had a blast painting the base for this war-guy. Scribing the lines and adding battle-damage was a nice little exercise to get re-antiquated with the #11.

Today I decided it was finally time to learn how to 3d model simple stuff, one day once I've learned the tolerances of 3d printing I can have some bits turned from pixels into plastic.
