WHAT IS THIS ENGINE?

Post by Jerry Ol'55 on Sun 21 Feb 2016, 9:16 pm

Started to put this engine together for my "Willys" altered. I have attached the chassis mounting plate to the engine, but then I thought... what the?.... looks like it's got the space at the rear for the dizzy (Chev engine?) , but  now I don't know.

Can any one shed some info on this engine???

"331/354/392 vs. 426
The easiest way to tell early Hemis from a 426: The early Hemi had a rear-mount distributor, an internal oil pump, and a separate valley cover. The 426 Hemis have a front-mount distributor, an external oil pump, and no valley cover with stock intake manifolds."
From here (http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/hrdp-1206-the-early-hemi-guide-of-death/)

So it might be a 392... Engines are confusing, but stuff like this makes for a great excuse to sit at the 'puter and look up some nice looking engines Very Happy

Pobably right Kasey, I was going off the shape of the head which looks like a later shape as opposed to the earlier one which is squarer, Who knows, I'm definitely no expert on Mopar stuff.

Yeah that's the confusing part for me too, maybe it's just what the manufacturer already had mastered when the kit came out. I'm not sure if the manufacturer offered 396 heads/covers at the time of release. Also a lot of blown hemis I saw on the net have the diz on the back. No idea how easy that conversion would be in real life, but maybe it would pay dint to not have leads catching in a blower belt lol

Guys! thanks heaps for your input, it's made my job a lot easier!. With your ideas, it gave me a basis on what to look for on this engine, so I went to the "puter"... looked up your suggestions, and came up with the 392 - 396 Hemi with rear mounted Dizz, and with the similarity shape etc, it looks like the engine I have. Thanks again.
Cheers
