Just the build of the B61

Workbench before clean up, problem is storage?

Start of the B model, had a very old, very fragile Jaymar cab, but it mostly got built out of car bog and HIPS sheet.

A lot of bog, lot of sanding

Sortof found a system for the rubber around screens, measured and cut .13mm clear for screen, stripped and slit the plastic sheath from fine wire, fed it around the winscreen, Fiddly but works well, no glue smears on glass

up on it's feet, DM600 drive

scratched the motor, exhaust from spares.

Don't remember looking at this post, love the idea for the windscreen rubber. I do like these old workhorses.
Has the build progressed any Clea?

The build of the B61...How it came to be here.

Post by clea on Thu 02 Jun 2016, 11:32 am

Just to finish this thread. The Jaymar cab was bought when they first released them and just sat, pulled it out for something to do in Portland. So I reckon it would be 30+ years. Terrible, fibreglass item, micro thin in some parts, and so brittle. First step, remove the bonnet, not sure why.
" />
The thing I found with the variance in the thickness, is in order to work on it I built it up with car bog, didn't help a lot, the bonnet basically shattered.
" />
The original roof profile was wrong, the windscreen profile was wrong, the front mudguard profile was wrong, Basically everything was changed, white is hips, and bog for the rest
" />
" />
" />
Reinforcing the cab for working on.
" />
was happy with the roof. Had to alter the rear
" />
" />
Pull the guards off because they were wrong, had to build the fiont of the cab
" />
Guards back on, inner guards made, profile looked better, door profiles not right.
" />
So...off came the doors, fab new ones out of 2mm sheet.
" />
" />
" />
The grill was wrong...so out it came.
" />
So knocked up a chassis
" />
" />
Tanks
" />
" />
" />
" />
Then the cowl was wrong, headlights looked shit
" />
sorted the cowl, pieced the bonnet together, white is hips, bottom half of both sides of bonnet had gone. Did the screens
" />
" />
Then...had to make a motor. I use stirps of styrene, the thickness of the strips gives you some idea of dimension as you are carving it out first cut out of the block.
" />
It's just bits of plastic..
" />
" />
" />
" />
" />
" />
" />
Made the new shutters, and the mack thingy on the top, mounted, hinged the bonnet hung the doors.
" />
" />
" />
" />
" />
(this is giving me the shits, so sorry AJ....cutting to the chase)
Finish interior.
" />
" />
" />
Paint and weather
" />
" />
" />
" />
" />

Geez, that's it AJ.......bet you're sorry you asked now.
Two things out of this one. And I equate this to...."if you buy a dog, you don't expect to have to teach it to bark when you get it home"....If you pay money for a 'cab' and don't alter  it from "stock" How does this shit come about.
From picking up the cab to  (without door handles and cab lights) I think all this bullshit took about 3 weeks. It was frustrating, but in the end I enjoyed it.
Just bits of plastic.......And a lot of bog.
