Toyota Crown Majesta VIP

Post by R36_Adelaide on Tue 18 Oct 2016, 7:14 pm

So this is going to be the next project, it's been sitting in my stash for about 5 years.

However mine has different rims in the kit (BBS LM) and this will be my first crack at a VIP kit. It comes with adjustable suspension where you can change both the ride height and the camber. Here's a pic of the colour combination I'm going for (car at the front), though I hope to have a satin finish. Haven't decided what interior combination to go with yet.

So far it's just been preparing the body and adding some primer, I'll get a couple of pics once I've got a few more exiting things to show.

Couple of progress pics. The suspension is quite complex, it has a 3 sets of screws and springs that adjust both the ride height and camber. Took a couple of tries to get it right but I'm pretty happy with how it sits. Started on the interior with airbrushing the base colour and having a go at flocking for the first time. Pretty happy with it but got a couple of spots to touch up on the rear parcel shelf. I've also placed my first order with Gravity Colors, hopefully it doesn't take too long to get here...

Interior colour combo I'm going for (anyone got tips for a successful wood grain finish?)

Looking good mate.
It sits just right.
As far as wood-graining goes I lay down a basecoat of Oak, Beige or a light Tan. Let that dry and then very loosely brush on a thin, streaky coat of a suitable artists oil paint. Something like Umber, Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna. The idea is to put down a grainy look, but if you're trying to replicate a Fiddle-back or Birdseye grain, then you will need to practice a bit on scrap to get the effect you like.
Hope this makes sense.

Like AJ said, base in a woody colour, then a darker artists oil paint streaked over it, or what I've done for straight grain wood is to carefully scribe some grain lines into the panels using a fresh blade and make light cuts, then after a wash of oil paint and a clear coat it looks pretty good

Ok so went and got some Burnt Sienna and Raw Sienna, had a few practice's at getting the technique then dove in. I'm not entirely happy with the finish as it was quite hard to get a neat edge to what you were doing while sponging it. Colour wise it is pretty close though. I also painted the rim centres pearl white and did the titanium look on the exhaust tips. Now just waiting on the body colour to arrive...

Finally got some colour on it! This is my first go at airbrushing a body so I wanted to make it as easy as possible. This is Lamborghini Tiffany Celeste Blue, pre mixed so it's ready to go straight away. Really happy with the result though it took a lot more coats than I thought it would. Might have something to do with me not quite having the pressure right. Now just to put the decals on and let it dry for a bit before I have a crack at airbrushing a 2 part clear.

You can flow more paint through if you have a double-action brush, but it's actually BETTER to do many light coats than one heavy coat. I'd only do a heavy coat if you weren't planning a clear coat but still wanted it glossy (i usually do one or two light, then one heavy)

Very true. I was happy with how mine turned out. I was just basing how many coats on a guy I watch on youtube who uses the same brand but his seems to have a lot better coverage than what I had.
