25th Mooneyes Yokohama Hot Rod and Custom Show Dec 2016

Post by Carps on Sun 25 Dec 2016, 10:26 am

So, with not much going on here and since I was already headed that way, here’s my take on the Mooneyes show.  Starting with our Saturday morning visit to the Mooneyes Store and Cafe, where there was a bit of a crowd and plenty of folks to talk with from all corners of the globe.  All in town for tomorrow's one day show.

Who said Toyota Crown's are dull and ugly?

This sucker is LOUD!

These, just cool.

Saturday evening was the pre-show shindig, a bunch of fun and great way to make new friends.

Sunday morning started early with the special guest cars and bikes being readied for their grand entrance behind the auditorium.

Once the impatient crowd out front had filled the building…….

….the back doors were opened and the special guest vehicles cruised inside to take their places on display.

The show was as awesome as ever and the model cars no less impressive than the real ones.

This is an exact and I mean exact replica of one of the full sized cars that was in the show last year.

If the 1/24 scale cars don't have you marvelling at the skill of Japanese modellers, check out the customised Hotwheels, starting with a scratch built American Graffiti diorama.

The Batomobile is a clever touch but how about the fuel system plumbing and wiring on Milners deuce?

Keith Weesner was selling prints of his art, but with a twist, he would draw in the buyer with an appropriate pose, pretty cool deal.

Yes I know!
But this is Japan after all!

And sometimes as we model builders well know, all is not what it appears to be.

One of my favourite cars of the show.

And the local vehicles don’t look too shabby even with just a wheel change and suspension adjustment.

There's even the odd Subaru and some of them are really odd. . Very Happy

Even a Nissan Cedric can be made to look OK with the right ammount of make-up.

Japanese Kustoms are simply out of this world, like this unit that was once a Valiant Hard Top and is now a hardtop convertible.

Some of these customized late model mini cars and commercials are quite clever.

Here's a 'Murrican car, built and painted in Japan.

This HiAce had a huge crowd around it all day, tube chassis, bagged double wishbone suspension at all corners and 500HP Lexus V8 drivetrain.

And yes, there were all kinds of hot rods, this one was a bit ratty but had a perfect hot rod presence and stance.

As found.

The locals do also have a sense of humour.

Another of my favourites, this Buick was close to perfection….

These gals may look a tad weird, but boy could they play, especially when it comes to surfing music.

This muddersickle from Indonesia was incredible, the multi cylinder, aero style radial engine was completely scratch built, using some standard bike parts but mostly it was home fabricated.

It's truly a work of art on two wheels.

Speaking of art, there was plenty of it on show, starting with the Woodcut challenge.  Artists were asked to create a work of art from a specified size chunk of timber…..

I swear I didn't do this on purpose, but I just noticed the eyes and where they are looking.

Another challenge was linked to the launch of the latest Mooneyes themed Vans shoes.  The company created a bunch of giant sized sneakers for the artists to decorate.

Yeah there's more but you don't gotta look if'n you don't want too.

Believe it or not, this was once a 1954 Chevrolet sedan.

The owner/builder of the bike hauling Chevy also built this

Had enough yet?

Sorry about the gurl in front of the Streamliner, I know you hate this kind of stuff, so the other shots where I couldn't avoid the gurls that kept standing in the frame I won't post up to annoy you.  However, for some unfortunate reason all the pics of this one have people in front of the car and this is the least crowded shot I managed to get.

Really, I'm sorry about that, it wont happen again.   Cool

Then as quickly as the day started, it was done and time to pack up, roll everything out and head for the next party.

We saw this one cruising town around midnight filled with people and a headbanger punck rock style tune being played very loud through the stereo.  The only words discernable from the sone were a chorus of "F*^K the Police, F#^K the police……" repeated over and over a again.

The owner of this car decided not to head for the party, instead he took off mumbling something about some nasty dude driving a black 55 Chevy needing his ass kicked!

Such is the precision and organisation by the Mooneyes crew that less than an hour after the doors closed, the hall (it’s as big as Geoff’s shed here in Melbourne) was empty and the after party underway.

Yup the girls of Mooneys are worth a second look.

I may be old but it seems I haven't lost my ability to make the ladies smile.

And here's a few more of the model cars, just so you don't become distracted.  See how many 1/24 scale kits you recognise.

This is the original big T kit.

And all these are hot wheels or Tomica 1/64 scale.

I know they are all die cast models (just on 1,000 of them in total), but this has got to be the neatest dunny in the whole world!

They are mounted to three walls behind glass, the fourth wall is mirror above the vanity and the ceiling, like the door is mirror also.

These shots are from a previous business trip, to visit the boss, along with the world's coolest dunny he has a lot of class and some expensive artwork, like this 3D mural in the stairwell from ground floor to basement entertainment room.

Look closely and you'll see LFA super car, RC F and a couple of F Sport models.

Like the Dunny idea--- seeing I have my outside Dunny at the back corner of our house --turn it into a completed model and Hot Wheels ( got a hundreds of them now)Showcase, instead of having them stored in boxes at back of garage. Nice shots and I love Mooneyes cars--have an expanding 1/64 collection of them as well! Thanks Carps.

I picked up Wildman at the airport this morning and got him down to Phillip Island for the Kustom Nationals.

He's arguably the best pinstriper on earth today (Ed Roth even said that) and he'll be showing how it's done and even giving some lessons over the Kustom Nats weekend.

Here’s a couple of recent examples of Wildman’s art starting with the contest sign for the Mooneyes show which tou've already seen above.

I watched him do one of these shoes a couple of weeks before the Mooneys show,  made it look easy and got it done in record time (did the pair after lunch and before sometime).  Would have taken me as long just to lay down the black lines.

And he also did the artwork for this year's event, including posters and T shirts.

But of course there will be much more happening at the worlds most beautiful Grand Prix Circuit and the surrounding area.  The forecast is also for perfect weather, so it's going to be one awesome big car party with music and other stuff added for good measure.
